Physiological and bio-chemical changes in the leaf tissues from quiescent to fruiting stages in mango

Physiological changes in respect of auxin, gibberellins and cytokinin during quiescent, bud burst, flowering and fruiting stages were assayed in three mango cultivars, viz, Neelum, Mulgoa and Peter. Auxin content was higher at quiescent and flowering stages than at bud burst and fruiting stages. Gibberellin content was the lowest at bud burst stage, while at the flowering stage, it was at the highest level. At fruiting stage, it was greater than at the bud brust stage. At quiescent stage, the gibberellin level did not differ from the flowering and fruiting stages. Cytokinin content was the highest at the quiescent and at the bud burst stages. The least content was observed at the fruiting stage. At flowering stage, it was higher than at the fruiting stage but lower than at the quiescent and bud burst stages. Bio-chemical changes in respect of starch, protein, nucleic acids and ascorbic acid were also studied. The starch content of the leaf tissue of the three mango cultivars was higher at flowering and fruiting stages than at the quiescent stage, while the protein content at quiescent stage was greater than at flowering and fruiting stages. RNA content was maximum at flowering and the lowest at the quiescent stage. It declined at fruiting stages compared to the flowering stage. DNA content showed a similar trend. At flowering stage, the ascorbic acid was at the highest level, while it was the least at the quiescent stage. At the fruiting stage, the content was less than at flowering stage.
