Changes in composition of tears of malnourished children
1978
The influence of malnutrition on the composition of blood and tears of preschool children in Colombia was assessed. It was found that protein calorie malnutrition caused reductions in the lysozyme and secretory IgA concentrations of tears but did not alter protein, albumin concentrations or aminopeptidase activity. Such reductions of the amount observed in the malnourished children would seem likely to increase the susceptibility of mucosal surfaces to infection. Studies of saliva composition may produce more quantifiable data.
