Effect of wastewater depth to the performance of short-term batching-experiments horizontal flow constructed wetland system in treating domestic wastewater

Constructed wetland (CW) is one of alternative technologies to treat domestic wastewater rather than using physico-chemical processes. In this research, the efficiency of CW to treat domestic wastewater was analyzed.Short-term batching-experiments of horizontal flow CW under different wastewater depth (35 cm and 45 cm) planted with native plants of Lepironia articulata and Scirpus grossus was tested for 5 days to remove Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), ammonium and phosphate. Results showed that all planted CW showed high removal of BOD₅, COD, TSS, ammonium and phosphate with values up to 99.70%, 96.94%, 99.03%, 100% and 99.5%, respectively. The addition of plants significantly increases the BOD₅, COD and TSS removal up to 27%, 38.5% and 40% compared to the non-planted beds, respectively. The wastewater depth of 45 cm had a significantly lower dissolved oxygen concentration inside CW as compared to the 35 cm depth, resulting in lower efficiency of BOD5 and COD removals. The addition of plants showed a significant increase in ammonium and phosphate removal, indicating both plants performance in up taking nutrients from wastewater. S. grossus showed a slightly higher capability in up taking phosphate compared to the L. articulata. No significant difference was obtained for nutrient removal under different wastewater depth. The result of this research showed that short-term planted CW was reliable in treating domestic wastewater with high organic and nutrient concentration characteristics.
