Wood residue availability in the northeastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana area

This paper details the mill residue supply situation in the northeastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana area. Consumption was examined based on the projected need of facilities using wood fiber residue from lumber and plywood manufacture. The volume available annually was estimated based on various levels of lumber and plywood output. Four levels of supply were examined based on 1986-1988 production of lumber and plywood in the region. This period was one of record production for the sawmill industry in the region and high production for the plywood industry. Given timber supply constraints in the region, it appears virtually impossible that production levels in the future can be sustained at this level. So, the 1986-1988 levels were used as the upper bound and three more levels of production were analyzed at 90, 80, and 70 percent of 1986-1988 levels. Given current demand, it appears that surpluses of mill residue would exist if lumber and plywood production can be maintained at or near the recent record levels. However, large deficits of all types could be expected with even modest declines in lumber and plywood production.
