Different ecological parameters were studied in rice fields and adjacent water bodies during 1983-1985 and 1987, to find the limiting environmental factor(s), if any, which can be manipulated for controlling the aquatic algal weed Chara. The survey results indicate that low light conditions created by dense crop canopy or turbidity, low pH, low concentrations of phosphorus in water, shallow water depth and frequent wetting-drying of soil after oosporc germination is detrimental to the weed. Exploration of these factors for pollution free ecological control of the weed is discussed.
