24-methylene-25-methylcholesterol and both C-24 epimers of 24-ethyl-22-dehydrocholesterol in a freshwater green alga Hydrodictyon reticulatum

A freshwater green alga Hydrodictyon reticulatum contained cholesterol and 24-ethylcholesterol as the dominant sterols. 24-Methylcholesterol, 24-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol, 24-ethyl-22-dehydrocholesterol and 24-methylene-25-methylcholesterol were identified among the other sterols. The 400 MHz 1H NMR spectroscopy has shown that 24-methylcholesterol and 24-ethyl-22-dehydrocholesterol were mixtures of the C-24 epimers with the 24-alpha-epimers predominating, whereas 24-ethylcholesterol and 24-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol consisted only of the 24-alpha-epimers. This appears to be the first instance of the detection of a sterol possessing a quaternary carbon in the side chain (24-methylene-25-methylcholesterol) and the first demonstration of the occurrence of both C-24 epimers of a 24-ethylsterol(stigmasterol and poriferasterol) in a species from the phylum Chlorophyta.
