Influence of chronic ethanol consumption on the metabolism and action of vitamin D
1985
Gascon-Barre, M.
A detailed review (77 references) discusses some of the known or suspected effects of chronic alcoholism on vitamin D sterol synthesis in skin, liver, and kidney and the action of vitamin D hormone on target organs (particularly, the intestine), with respect to normal homeostatic factors regulating the "nutritional" and "hormonal" status of vitamin D. It is concluded that measurements of 25-hydroxy- and 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D circulating levels in chronic alcoholics may not be as good an index of vitamin D "nutritional" or "hormonal" status as in normal subjects, since unmetabolized vitamin D body stores may be affected by chronic ethanol consumption.(wz)
