Food preferences in farm animals: why don't they always choose wisely?
1995
Forbes, J.M. | Kyriazakis, I.
This paper explores the possible reasons for farm animals' apparent failures to select optimal diets, in order to assess whether such cases can be explained by inappropriate experimental design or whether there are some genuine failures to select adequately. These failures may be due to constraints imposed by the animal (learning, memory, social influences, nutrient requirements); constraints imposed by the environment (low protein content, work requirement); or animal-environment interactions (toxins, need for roughage, fecal contamination at pasture).
