Organic nitrogen in soil water from grassland under different land management strategies in the United Kingdom--a neglected N load to upland lakes

A preliminary investigation into the relationship between soil organic matter content, which is influenced by land management strategy, and the amount of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in the soil and lakes of agriculturally important catchments is presented. Soil and water samples from four catchments in upland areas of the United Kingdom (Wales and Cumbria) under different agricultural management strategies were analysed for total water-soluble carbon (C), N and phosphorus (P), as well as inorganic and organic C, N and P. Although no clear relationship was observed between soil organic matter content and DON in the soil or water, catchment location significantly influenced all nutrients measured. The amount of DON in the lakes was closely related to the amount in the soil, with over 60% of the N in both systems present in an organic form at all catchments. This finding emphasises the need to include the organic component in nutrient studies as it is the dominant form of soluble N in these oligotrophic ecosystems.
