This article reports on the development of an effective method for estimating the relative proportions of component grains in a grain mixture by measurement of aggregate true particle density of a sample from the mixture. True particle densities for dehulled rice, milled rice, white corn, pearl maize, dehulled wheat, barley, and soybean, as well as binary and tertiary mixtures of these cereal grains, were determined using a modified version of Day's "porosimeter" apparatus. These experimentally determined values compared well with those predicted by mass balance equations representing the mixture compositions as a function of known true particle densities of each component. In all cases, measured and calculated values differed by little more than 5%, with values for most mixtures differing by less than 1%.
