Controlled trial of supplemented oral nutrition in Crohn's disease

A randomized, 4-month controlled cross-over trial with 28 malnourished patients with Crohn's disease tested the value of an oral non-elemental liquid nutritional supplement (15.2% protein, 51.8% carbohydrate, 33% corn oil (fat), enriched with the necessary vitamins and minerals), taken at home. Anthropometric measures, serum protein, creatinine height index, and circulation T lymphocytes significantly increased during supplement dosing, while serum orosomucoid levels significantly fell (indicating a reduction in disease state). The results indicate that enteral supplementation can be well managed at home, and that an improved nutrition and reduced disease state may be attained. (wz)
