Use of thiocyanate to evaluate nitrate movement in soil
1979
Ojeniyi, S. O. | BARTHOLOMEW, W. V.
Nitrate ion (NO3) movement in soil was successfully simulated by the use of thiocyanate ion (SCN). Weekly measurements of the extent of thiocyanate movement, rainfall, and soil water content at the time of thiocyanate injection were made at two field sites. For depths not exceeding 30 cm, the regression coefficient of distance of thiocyanate movement (cm) on centimeters of rainfall (minus threshold) varied from 2.54 to 3.96, while r value (correlation coefficient) varied from 0.76 to 0.91. The threshold rainfall varied from 1.63 to 1.95 cm. The technique could be used to assess leaching and evapotranspiration.
