The relationship between resting metabolic rate (RMR) and different body size of 28 obese and normal weight females aged 20-30 was examined. The RMR of the subjects was determined indirectly by oxygen consumption and body fat percentage by densitometry. The RMR rate per kg body weight was lower in the obese group. When expressed per kg fat-free body mass, energy expenditure under resting conditions was higher in the obese group. No single body parameter was suitable to estimate RMR in subjects differing substantially in body composition. The best prediction of RMR was obtained when both fat-free mass and fat mass were used as independent variables in a linear regression equation.
