The Karwendel mountain range is composed of predominantly Triassic rocks. Carbonates of the Wetterstein-Formation, Alpine Muschelkalk and Main Dolomite serve as the main aquifers. Several high-discharge springs with values exceeding 100 liter per second are known, among others Schwarzlackenquelle and Bollenbachquelle. The so-called Mühlauer Springs yield about 90% of Innsbruck’s water supply. Another domestic water supply is situated in the Halltal valley, no more than about eight kilometres away. Over the past few years, monitoring programmes were carried out to collect relevant hydrogeological data on springs and surface waters, including in-situ measurements as well as hydrochemical and stable isotope analyses. In the course of these studies, questions concerning the complex relations and dependencies of springs within the aquifers of the Inntal thrust sheet have arisen. Gaining further knowledge and understanding is critically important for the future supply of high-quality drinking-water.
