Growth of Agricultural Sector in Maharashtra – A Quantitative Analysis

The paper has probed into the changes in share of different sectors of agriculture and within agriculture, different crop groups over time in the state of Maharashtra. The decadal performance of agriculture has been judged for the period 1960–61 to 2002–03 and changes in gross value of output have been probed for the period 1993–94 to 2004–05. The study has revealed that the share of agriculture in the net state domestic product has declined continuously during the study period. The share of crop enterprise in the gross value of output in agriculture has also declined. During the period 1993–94 to 2004–05, the gross value of output has increased at the rate of 1.18 per cent per annum from agriculture and at the rate of 3.05 per cent per annum from livestock. In the gross value of output from agriculture, the shares of cereals and pulses have declined and of fruits and vegetables have increased. The study has suggested that for increasing the share of output from agriculture, adoption of diversification in cropping pattern is essential in the state.
