Aconitum: effect of tuber size, day length and Ga on growth, flowering and tuber production

The flower quality of the mother plants had no adverse effects on the growth and quality of the next year flowers and tubers. In contrast, tuber size had a major impact on both flowering quality and daughter tuber yield. Mother tuber size was in direct relation with the stem and the raceme length, the stem diameter and the number of the flowers per stem. As a result, the use of small tubers (less than 10 g) is recommended for tuber production, but not for cut flower production. The propagation index also increased with increasing mother tuber size. Aconitum growth and flowering were highly affected by day length. Stem and raceme length were doubled and number of flowers per raceme increased, but time for flowering was delayed under long day conditions. Pre-planting application of Ga to the tubers eliminate the need for cold induced dormancy break and enhanced sprouting. A single foliar application of Ga after bolting increased significantly the stem length and also affected number of flowers and daughter tuber yield.
