Coffee production in Nepal - a brief review

In Nepal, coffee has become a major cash crop as its demand continues to increase in the domestic and international market as Himalayan specialty coffee. The major cultivar grown in Nepal is 'Arabica' (Coffea arabica). It is grown in regions 800-1600 m a.s.l., which is a higher altitude than the world's geographic latitude, known as the “coffee belt”. Traditional and improved methods of cultivation are applied at commercial farms distributed in 2646 ha of land in 42 out of 75 districts of Nepal. The annual production increased at the rate of 466 Mt of green beans in 2016-2017 and more recently, 517 Mt. Nepal's geographical conditions such as elevation, temperature and rainfall have proven to be suitable to grow high quality coffee. Coffee grown in rural areas of Nepal is considered 'organic by default' because accessing chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides is difficult for farmers. There is ample scope for growing organic coffee in Nepal while creating opportunities for rural employment. With appropriate technical facilities and manpower, the demand and export of Nepalese specialty coffee is expected to rise further.
