Chlorinated carbamoylethyl starch for wet-rub resistant paper coatings

The paper describes the preparation and application of chlorinated carbamoylethyl starch derivatives as adhesives to develop wet-rub resistance in pigmented paper coatings. Carbamoylethyl starch (CES) with degrees of substitution (DS) of 0. 03-0. 39 was prepared from aqueous alkaline mixtures of commercial acid-modified corn starch and acrylamide and used as the adhesive in coating mixtures (colors) treated with sodium hypochlorite solution. When these coatings are heat-cured (150 degree C, 1 min), high degrees of wet-rub resistance equivalent to those required for commercial offset- and label-grade coated papers are achieved without deleterious effects on wax pick and brightness. Experimental data are presented and discussed.
