Vine growth and fruit quality of 'Kyoho' grapes as affected by mepiquat chloride and GA

To prevent berry shattering and improve fruit quality of ‘Kyoho’ grapes, mepiquat chloride (MC) was sprayed to whole vines at 7 to 8 leaf stage and subsequently flower clusters were dipped in GA solution at full bloom stage. MC alone and in combination with GA inhibited shoot growth. MC and GA, alone or combined, increased leaf area, chlorophyll content, and enhanced the fruit maturity by one week. Four-fold increase in cluster weight was obtained by MC 2,200 ppm + GA 100 ppm, and this combination along with MC 880 ppm + GA 100 ppm was also effective in berry enlargement. Titrable acidity was slightly higher with MC alone and in combination with GA while soluble solids content was not affected. GA alone and in combination with MC increased seedless berries and berry setting. In conclusion, MC+GA, especially MC 2,200 ppm + GA 100 ppm, was very effective for berry set and berry size increase, thus fruit quality.
