Processing and refining capacity of the domestic sugar industry
1984
Angelo, L. | Barry, R.D.
Extract: The number of sugarbeet and sugarcane processing facilities has decreased significantly in the United States since 1970. However, the current annual capacity of sugarcane processors to produce raw sugar under optimal operating conditions exceeds the record 1982-crop production by 400,000 tons. On the other hand, the present capacity of sugarbeet processors to produce refined beet sugar under optimal conditions is 300,000 tons less than the average production of beet sugar during 1970-82, and 1 million tons below the record 1975 production. Sugarbeet pocessing capacity is likely to continue to decline. The plant capacity to refine raw sugar from domestic and foreign sources is substantially above current U.S. consumption requirements.
