Molecular mapping of quantitative trait loci controlling chlorophyll content at different developmental stages in tetraploid cotton

With 1 figure and 4 tables Physiological breeding is an effective way to improve crop productivity. Complex genetics and strong environmental influences can hinder progress in chlorophyll improvement during conventional cotton breeding. In this study, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was conducted to better understand the genetic mechanisms of leaf chlorophyll production. Based on data from three developmental stages (early square, full bloom, and early boll opening) of a cross between Gossypium hirsutum x Gossypium barbadense, 24 QTLs were identified in a population of 140 BC₁ plants. QTLs controlling chlorophyll-a and -b and total chlorophyll content at the three developmental stages explained 6.11-64.49% of the phenotypic variation. One main effect QTL for chlorophyll-a (qCa-A12-2) was detected on chromosome A12 and expressed at all three developmental stages. Two QTLs on chromosome A06, including qCb-A6-1 for chlorophyll-b and qTC-A6-1 for total chlorophyll content were expressed at both stages 1 and 3. QTLs detected in this experiment are expected to be valuable to advance cotton-breeding programmes targeted at improvement in leaf chlorophyll composition and photosynthetic efficiency.
