This brief review defines fiber, clarifies the physiological effects of fiber (those currently known and those under investigation), and examines the fiber content and other nutrient characteristics of various foods. Theories that might explain the possible role of fiber in reducing the incidence of constipation, diverticular disease, cancer of the colon and cardiovascular diseases are described. Dietary guidelines are presented and it is recommended that this information be communicated to students and the public through nutrition education.
