Extract: An intervention study to assess the impact of diet on a number of coronary risk factors was carried out among 30 free-living rural families in North Karelia, Eastern Finland. After a baseline period, the middle-aged couples changed their diet, characterized by a high-fat content and a low P:S ratio, to a low-fat, high P:S diet for six weekd. The most important foodstuffs were given free of charge, and the families were given counseling. The compliance and observed changes were greater than expected; the acceptance of the new diet was good; and the nutrient density of the diet was greatly improved. (Author)
