Computers in the schools: The need for policy and action

An Agency for Instructional Television study explored policy issues related to acquisition and use of computers in schools. The Delphi method was used to collect data. Respondents were concerned about the role of these educational tools in elementary and secondary classrooms; and desired approaches that promote and extend instruction within the existing curriculum. Ways are being sought to develop high quality software that meets the needs and expectations of educators. There is also concern about what kind of training will be required by this new technology and who should be required to obtain it. Concern was expressed about the kinds of research that should be done, who should be responsible for it, and methods for dissemination and application of the findings. Few respondents predicted drastic changes as the result of computer availability; however, many were concerned that this development neither be ignored nor abused and that educational agencies focus on reasonable expectations from this addition to the classroom.
