Meal and snacking patterns of students

A survey of 3,309 students attending 135 Louisiana schools (grades 3-12) was conducted to determine meal and snacking patterns. Grade division was the independent variable: elementary, 3-6; junior high, 7-8; and senior high, 9-12. Questions concerned number of meals and snacks consumed; vitamin supplementation; and attitude towards and availability of new or unfamiliar foods. Most students consume 3 meals a day, but breakfast was the meal most frequently skipped. Those who ate breakfast did so at home (83%) and at school (15%). The majority of students ate school lunches where they experienced most of their new, disliked, or unfamiliar foods. Snacks were consumed at least once a day, the afternoon being the usual time. Older students consumed the most snacks, which were usually purchased at school. Vitamin supplements were consumed by 44% of the students. (kbc)
