Storing whole-tree wood chips in interior Alaska
1989
Sampson, G.R. | McBeath, J.H.
Chips from white spruce trees and sawtimber tops were placed in a pile near Fairbanks, Alaska, in February 1983. Changes in moisture content (MC) and temperature within the pile were monitored until the end of the study in August 1986. Results indicated that the calorific value of the chips did not change significantly. However, the high MC in much of the pile after storage made the chips unsuitable for burning unless dried. Two small pockets of chips with wood decay fungus were observed. The fungus was identified as a brown rot, Oligoporus placentus (Fr.) Gilbn. & Ryv.
