The use of entomopathogenic nematodes in control of western corn rootworm | Primjena entomopatogenih nematoda u suzbijanju kukuruzne zlatice

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte, 1868 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is the most significant pest in corn production in Europe and in the world. In order to avoid economic losses, the population of this pest has to be kept low. Decrease of damage is possible by avoiding consecutive corn sowing or by application of insecticides. Both measures have negative consequences: decrease of corn production or increased insecticides application whose residues have negative effect on environment. As alternative for control of corn rootworm larva, biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) of Steinernema Travassos, 1927 and Heterorhabditis Poinar, 1976 strains can be applied. In this work the literature data about Steinernema and Heterorhabditis species efficacy in western corn rootworm control is presented so as the analisys of their suitability for use in Croatia.
