Starch synthesis during dormancy breakage in oilseed of Corylus avellena

Dormancy in seed of Corylus avellana L. (hazel) is broken by a sustained period of cold stratification. During this time both cytological and metabolic changes occur. Starch was present initially at a low level but increased by 20% in the embryonic axes of hazel seeds during stratification at 5 °C, while it decreased rapidly and then remained constant in the embryonic axes from seeds held at 20 °C. Histochemical study confirmed this analytical result. A comparison of the developmental pattern of starch level with bound and soluble ADP glucose-starch synthase activity at 5 and 20 °C showed that the accumulation of starch in the embryonic axes followed an enhanced activity of the granule-bound ADP glucose-starch synthase. Cold stratification resulted in an increase in starch content, which was probably as a result of gluconeogenesis from products of reserve lipid hydrolysis.
