Evening primroses, native to South America, are found in mountains and fields throughout the country. This study investigated the primary components and functions of evening primrose oil (EPO). EPO is extracted from evening primrose seeds and contains various compounds, including γ-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, tetracosanol, hexacosanol, docosanal, β-sitosterol, campesterol, ferulic acid, vanillin, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol. EPO has antiinflammatory effects that inhibit the activity of inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6. EPO improves female diseases such as premenstrual syndrome, mastalgia and hot flushing, atopic dermatitis, acne, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. Furthermore, EPO has anti-cancer and antioxidant effects. Therefore, EPO can treat various diseases as a healthy, functional food material.
