Sugar Production in Ukraine: Trends and Problems

Sugar beet and sugar industry are an important part of the Ukrainian national economy. This article briefly introduces the history of sugar beet industry in Ukraine. The next part of the text describes the trends in sugar beet cultivation after the year 2000; the basic indicators in the years 2006–2017 (sugar yield, sugar content) are also presented. The basic trend of decreasing sown area for sugar beet in the period 2000–2020 is mentioned. The decreasing number of sugar factories is also discussed; only 33 factories are in operation in 2020. In recent years, attention has also focused on modernization and diversification of production, especially the production of biogas and the use of pulp and molasses.
