Prediction of Fusarium head blight occurence based on the assessment of pathogen infection structures on maize post-harvest residues

The occurrence of perithecia, their frequency and ascospores production was evaluated on maize post harvest residues during 2019–2021. Dead parts of maize plant tissues from soil surface were collected in different fields sown with winetr wheat after maize as a preceding crop. We confirmed that the crucial ascospores distribution period occured in different seasons in similar period - the start of June. The differences in perithecia occurence frequency and the ripening of ascospores were found. The epidemic season 2020 was a year when the flowering period of winter wheat overlapped with the main period of ascospores distribution accompanied with rainy weather. Suitability of this method for quick prediction of the state of source of epidemy is discussed. The average period of the variety use within the project was 5 years. The influence of the weather in different years is discussed.
