Resource studies in relation to the development of African inland fisheries

The paper discusses relevance of studieson the resources to the decisions that havetaken for the development of managementof African inland fisheries. Particular emphasisis given to outlining the types ofadvice that can be provided by the biologist,without which the decisions taken can easilybe wrong. The primary information concernsthe magnitude of the potential yieldfrom the resource, and how it compares withpresent catches. From this the possibilitiesfor development can be assessed, or the needfor management be determined.Methods of determining the potential, andthe data used in their application are brieflyreviewed. Because scientific advice on theresource is desirable as early as possible inthe development of a fishery, simple but rather rough methods may be equally, if notmore, valuable than more precise but moredifficult methods.
