Microorganisms as a biological component are good indicators of soil quality because they respond quickly to changes in the soil ecosystem, so microbiological activity can be used for the determination of soil fertility. The aim of this study was to examine microbiological and basic chemical properties of natural grasslands soils on the Municipality of Sjenica. Soil samples from 28 grasslands (16 meadows and 12 pastures) were taken aseptically from a depth of 0-25 cm. Studied soil samples were characterized by relatively low pH and medium content of humus. The total number of microorganisms in soil samples varied from 7.253 to 8.072, the number of free-living nitrogen-fixers from 6.235 to 6.934 and fungi from 4.464 to 5.501 (log of number) per one gram of absolutely dry soil. No correlation was noted between the number of examined groups of microorganisms and the way of using grasslands.
