Effect of fresh langkawas (Alphinia galanga L. Willd.) as feed supplement on growth performance, carcass and semen qualities of Darag native chicken
2024
Malijan, M.O.P.
Fresh Langkawas rhizome was supplemented in the diet of Darag native chickens (n=90) at different inclusion rates (0, 1%, 2%) to evaluate its efficacy on growth and meat quality. Darag fed with 2% fresh Langkawas had the heaviest weight gain at 12 to 13 weeks of age, while body weight and gain, feed intake, FCR, dressing percentage, abdominal fat, weight of different cut-ups and meat ph were comparable (P0.05) in all growth stages. Significantly (P0.01) lower drip loss and meat temperature were recorded in those fed with 1-2% fresh Langkawas. Additionally, sexually-matured cockerels (n0.05) but percent coiled tail and percentage of semen with distal droplets were higher (p0.01) in cockerels given the 2% dietary treatment. To determine the farmers' attitude on the use of Langkawas as a feed supplement, 115 respondents were surveyed. All respondents were familiar with Langkawas; 83% were aware of its availability and 94% recognize it as a traditional medicine. Majority (7472%) perceived Langkawas as a supplement for improving their native chickens. The ease of use is weakly related to behavioral intent and attitude. This study showed that for Darag chickens, Langkawas can improve the meat quality but its use for breeders must not exceed 1% as it can result to lower semen quality. Predictive accuracy of the soil-landscape model was assessed by using published soil map as a reference for validation. Since the predictive accuracy of the model reached more than 50 0/0 this was then applied to predict soil distribution in the undifferentiated areas of Davao City. To further validate, nine soil profiles were evaluated, classified, and matched to the soil's name predicted both in the mapped and undifferentiated areas. The validated soil-landscape model was then used to generate an interpretative soil map of Davao City.
