In recent years there has been increasing occurrence of outbreaks of nettle caterpillars (Limacodidae) and bagworms (Psychidae) on oil palms in Sumatra. Various attempts at control have been made, with a range of very different outcomes, from continuing worsening recurrence to "success". This paper considers these outbreaks in terms of the ecology in relation to existing knowledge of the importance of background natural enemy control, and then describes some estate situations, and a trial programme to further develop selective control measures to terminate outbreaks.
