Interacción de fósforo y hierro en la interfase sedimento-agua respecto a la eutrofización de la presa La Llave

Se ha estudiado la relación entre el Fósforo y Hierro tanto disuelto como en la interfase sedimento-agua, con respecto a la eutrofización de la presa ¿La Llave¿ (estado de Querétaro, México). Con ese propósito, durante 12 meses consecutivos a partir de Noviembre de 2007 se tomaron muestras de sedimento y agua de la presa para su posterior análisis en el laboratorio. Además se practicaron 5 extracciones secuenciales a cada muestra de sedimento: i) NH4Cl para la extracción de la fracción soluble de P, ii). Ditionito-carbonato para la disolución de oxidos de Fe, iii) NaOH 0.1 M para disolver fosfolípidos y polifosfatos; iv) HCl 0.5 M para el fósforo unido a la apatita y calcita y v) NaOH 1 M pero a 85 °C para el fósforo orgánico refractario soluble. Con estas extracciones se determino la distribución del P y del Fe en las distintas fases minerales del sedimento. Se clasificaron los resultados por estación climática. Las mayores concentraciones de P y Fe solubles se encontraron en primavera, mientras que el fósforo y nitrógeno total en la columna de agua clasifican a la presa al borde de la anoxia, siendo el nutriente limitante el N. Durante la época de sequía el P entra a la columna por disolución del sedimento. Durante la investigación se encontraron 3 canales que conducen agua residual a esta presa y son quienes introducen nutrientes, uno de ellos incluso residuos industriales y metales pesados. Se ha observado que la cinética de disolución del Fe es mucho más lenta que la del P. Se ha concluido que la Presa La Llave se encuentra altamente eutrofizada y a punto de la anoxia, limitada por la concentración de nitrógeno. El lirio declina en primavera al sedimento, agravando la escases de oxígeno. Durante la época seca, el fósforo ingresa a la columna de agua proveniente del sedimento, que muestra una dinámica de disolución más rápida que el hierro. En el resto del año el P ingresa a la presa por los canales mencionados antes. La mejor manera de disminuir el grado de eutrofización de la presa es el tratamiento del agua de los canales antes de entrar en la misma.

The relationship between both dissolved phosphorus and iron in the sediment-water interface in relation to the possible eutrophication of "La Llave" dam (state of Querétaro, Mexico) was studied. For this reason, during 12 consecutive months starting on November 2007, samples of sediment and water from the dam for subsequent laboratory analysis were taken. In addition five sequential extractions were performed to each sample of sediment: NH4Cl to remove the P soluble fraction; dithionite-carbonate for dissolution of oxides of Fe and Mn, 0.1 M NaOH to soluble phospholipids and polyphosphates; 0.5 M HCl for phosphorus bound to apatite and calcite, and 1 M NaOH at 85 ° C for the refractory organic phosphorus These extractions helped to determine the distribution of P and Fe in the different mineral phases of the sediment. The results obtained were classified by weather station. The highest concentrations of soluble P and Fe in the water column were found in spring, while, total nitrogen and total phosphorus indicated high eutrophication of the dam and an anoxia condition, whit N as the limiting nutrient. During the dry season P was recycled from the sediment to the water column. During the investigation 3 channels carring residual water to the dam were found. Those are the principal source of nutrients, one of them introducing industrial waste and heavy metals. It was observed that the kinetics of Fe dissolution is much slower than that of P. We ancluded the dam ¿La Llave¿ is highly eutrophicated and in anoxia conditions, limited by the concentration of nitrogen. In spring, the lily sediment in the bottom of the dam, aggravating the shortage of oxygen. During the dry season phosphorus enters to the water column from sediment dissolution, being this dissolution a faster than Fe. The rest of the year P enters to the dam through the channels mentioned before. The best way to reduce the degree of eutrophication of the dam is the treatment of the water channel before entering the dam.
