The Agricultural Sector in Qatar: Challenges and Opportunities
2010
ICARDA, Communication Team
The State of Qatar imports most of its food. In 2008, when prices for major commodities rose sharply, several food-exporting nations banned exports, in an effort to shore up their own food security. In 2009, H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, announced the creation of the Qatar National Food Security Programme (QNFSP), a task force of several organizations mandated to reduce the country’s reliance on agricultural imports. Under a direcƟve from H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Heir Apparent, the QNFSP’s task was to explore potential long term solutions to meet food security needs given the limited domestic production, caused by severe scarcity of water and arable land.
