Collaborative sorghum research in Asia, particularly China, India, Iran, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand, and also Australia, is discussed, with emphasis on the major production constraints and research priorities. The changing role of sorghum from a subsistence crop to a multiple-use crop (food, feed and fodder) and the considerable potential for increasing demand by promoting alternative uses (e.g. in processed foods and industrial products) were recognized. It was recommended that future collaborative research on sorghum be integrated into the Cereals and Legumes Asia Network (CLAN). This would create a single network covering the CLAN priority crops (sorghum, millets, groundnuts, chickpeas and pigeonpeas), and would strengthen collaborative research and technology and information exchange both within and outside the network.
