Catastrophic emergence of Pantoea stewartii as a plant pathogen in Malaysia

Pantoea stewartii (P. stewartii) originated in the USA and is widely disseminated to Africa North, Central, and South America, Asia, and Europe. A recent pest survey card by reinforced P. stewartii as a Union Quarantine Pest and urged specific measures to prevent the introduction of this bacterium. These past five years studies showed P. stewartii among the top worldwide phytopathogenic Pontea species inflicting damage and harming economically important crops and ornamental and flowering plant species, especially in Malaysia. Infection with P. stewartii subspecies stewartii (P. stewartii subsp. stewartii), which causes jackfruit-bronzing disease, is a huge problem faced by the jackfruit industry in Malaysia. Earlier findings revealed that the pathogenecity symptoms of P. stewartii subsp. stewartii isolates on jackfruit varieties, sweetcorn, cucumber, and pineapple based on a disease rating assessment of jackfruit--bronzing disease from several outbreak sites in Malaysia. Recent studies revealed the infection by Pantoea stewartii subspecies indologenes (P. stewartii subsp. indolegenes leads to devastating bacterial leaf blight disease of rice, affecting the economic and commercial values of these crops. The effectiveness and efficacy of disease management including chemical and biological controls is vital to prevent disease transmission by the catastrophic bacterium.
