Technology verification on pest management for Sweet Abulug Pomelo (SAP) in Cagayan Province, Philippines

Cagayan Valley is the top corn producer in the Philippines. However, in Cagayan Province, most of the production area are in the river flood plains and upland areas. With this scenario, corn production is prone to damage cause by flooding during the rainy season ending up some farmers could only plant once a year. Hence, introducing citrus like mandarin, pomelo, calamansi, and oranges are farmers option to make their farm productive and profitable. In the past three decades, citrus was already popular as source of income of farmers aside from rice and corn, but due to pests and diseases attacking the trees, the popularity of these crops faded resulting to low supply of citrus in meeting local demands. The threat of the pandemic COVID-19 triggered the importance of this fruit as source of Vitamin C to fight and boost the immune system of the populace. Hence, DA-NCES played a vital role in the conduct of research to revive the unproductive citrus trees especially pomelo. The Sweet Abulug Pomelo became popular again because of its sweetness and affordable price comparing to Davao Pomelo. DA-NCES conducted research, 2023 on improving the fruit quality and increasing the yield using different control measures against major pest citrus like fruit bagging, insect trapping, use of biological control agents (Metarhizium Anisoplae) and chemical control, employing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) as part of the care and maintenance of citrus promised a significant result. Among the treatments, chemical spray improved the fruit quality improved to 80-90% when applied during the flowering stage. However, other treatments can be farmers option considering health benefits. With the support of the Local Goverment Unit of Abulug, Cagayan an ordinance encouraging households to plant pomelo in their backyard or in commercial scale was approved and implemented making Pomelo as sustainable livelihood.
