ECOLOGÍA DE LA SERPIENTE DE CASCABEL Crotalus atrox EN UN ECOSISTEMA INSULAR

"México ocupa el primer lugar mundial en diversidad de serpientes de cascabel, con 45 especies, representando el 85% del total global. El género crótalus desempeña un papel crucial como regulador de poblaciones de roedores y lagartijas, especialmente en las islas del Golfo de California, donde han surgido endemismos notables como Crotalus catalinensis, C. lorenzoensis, C. estebanensis, C. angelensis y C. atrox (= tortugensis). A pesar de la importancia ecológica de este grupo, la investigación sobre estas serpientes es limitada, en particular para C. atrox (= tortugensis) que se encuentra en la NOM-059 SEMARNAT en la categoría de protección especial. El estudio tiene como objetivo analizar aspectos ecológicos, como la abundancia en diferentes hábitats (laderas y mesetas), la identificación de la dieta mediante el análisis de excretas y la descripción del uso de microhábitats. Se realizaron visitas a la isla en temporadas seca y de lluvias, llevando a cabo transectos visuales nocturnos para recolectar datos y serpientes. De las 47 serpientes recolectadas, se sexaron 42 (26 machos y 16 hembras). El análisis morfométrico reveló que no hay diferencias significativas en la longitud de hocico a cloaca (LHC), pero sí en la longitud de cloaca a cola (LCC), indicando dimorfismo sexual. El índice de Gibbons y Lovich confirmó que los machos son más grandes. La correlación positiva entre LHC y peso sugiere una relación directa entre el tamaño y el peso de las serpientes. La condición corporal evaluada demostró que la temporada seca tiene el mayor porcentaje (79%) de individuos en buena condición corporal. Al estimar la abundancia se observó que la serpiente de isla Tortuga es más abundante en zona de meseta que en laderas y es más probable observarla en temporada seca. El uso de microhábitat varió de acuerdo a la disponibilidad de recursos según la temporada y el hábitat, incluyendo refugio y alimento. El análisis de la dieta a través de excretas de 18 serpientes reveló que P. dickeyii fue la presa principal, seguida por Sceloporus orcutti y artrópodos. Aunque hubo diferencias en la proporción de presas consumidas entre hábitats, la prueba chi cuadrada no mostró diferencias significativas, posiblemente debido al tamaño de la muestra, por lo que se sugiere realizar investigaciones con un muestreo más extenso y equitativo a lo largo del año para comprender mejor la ecología de C. atrox (= tortugensis)."

The study aims to analyze ecological aspects such as abundance in different habitats (slopes and plateaus), diet identification through excrement analysis, and the description of microhabitat use. Visits to the island were conducted during dry and rainy seasons, employing nighttime visual transects to collect data and snakes. Of the 47 collected snakes, 42 were sexed (26 males and 16 females). Morphometric analysis revealed no significant differences in snout-vent length (SVL) but did show differences in cloaca to tail length (CTL), indicating sexual dimorphism. The Gibbons and Lovich index confirmed that males are larger. A positive correlation between SVL and weight suggests a direct relationship between size and weight. Body condition assessment demonstrated that the dry season had the highest percentage (79%) of individuals in good body condition. When estimating abundance, it was observed that the Tortuga Island snake is more abundant in plateau areas than slopes and is more likely to be observed during the dry season. Microhabitat use varied according to resource availability depending on the season and habitat, including shelter and food. Diet analysis of excrement from 18 snakes revealed P. dickeyi as the primary prey, followed by Sceloporus orcutti and arthropods. Although there were differences in the proportion of consumed prey between habitats, the chi-square test did not show significant differences, possibly due to the sample size. Therefore, further research with a more extensive and equitable sampling throughout the year is recommended to better understand the ecology of C. atrox (= tortugensis)."
