Evaluación de la capacidad de remoción de iones de cobre y cadmio presentes en agua marina por biomasa activada se Sargassum sinicola Setchell y Gardner 1924

"A nivel mundial, existe una gran preocupación por la contaminación del medio ambiente especialmente en los sistemas marinos. Entre los contaminantes más peligrosos están considerados los metales pesados, entre los que se encuentran Cd y Cu que se presentan en numerosas descargas. El Cd es un contaminante muy tóxico para plantas y animales. Por su parte el Cu es un micronutriente esencial para la mayoría de los seres vivos, pero cuando este elemento se encuentra en su forma iónica libre (Cu 2+) en altas concentraciones, se vuelve tóxico para las células microbianas, así como para ciertas algas, hongos e incluso animales. Actualmente no se cuenta con ningún sistema que pueda ayudar a solucionar o mitigar los problemas generados por la presencia de metales pesados en agua marina. A pesar de que las algas son utilizadas como bioindicadores de contaminación por su capacidad para acumular metales, no han sido utilizadas para la remoción de metales pesados en ambientes costeros. Con la finalidad de aportar las bases científicas que permitan el desarrollo de una tecnología de biorremediación eficiente, de bajo costo y con recursos renovables propios de la región del Golfo de California, se determino la máxima capacidad de remoción de iones de Cu y Cd por la macroalga café Sargassum sinicola colectada en las costas de Guaymas Sonora. También se estableció tiempo en el que la capacidad del alga se satura y el efecto del pH, del tipo de activación de la biomasa y de la presencia de otros iones en la solución sobre dicha capacidad en distintos ensayos. Se observó que S. sinicola presenta una baja capacidad de remoción de Cd al actuar en agua marina (2.8mg de metal por gramo de alga), mientras que muestra una buena capacidad de remoción de Cu (52mg de metal por gramo de alga) en comparación a las eficiencias de otros biosorbentes reportados en la literatura revisada. S. sinicola además de presentar una buena capacidad de remoción de Cu, puede mantener dicha capacidad en un rango de pH y de salinidad común en el medio marino. Sobresale el hecho de que la biomasa algal no requiere de activación para la remoción de este elemento y que su actividad no es afectada por la presencia de Cd en la solución, obteniéndose el 98% del retiro del metal en solo 75 minutos. De este trabajo se concluye que S. sinicola puede ser utilizado como un biosorbente de bajo costo para la remoción de Cu de agua marina pero no para la remoción de Cd."

Heavy metals are some of the most dangerous polluting agents, among them, Cu and Cd are present in numerous discharges. Cd is a very toxic polluting agent for plants and animals. With the purpose of contributing the scientific bases that allow the development of a technology of efficient biorremediation, of low cost and with own renewable resources of the region of the Gulf of California; the maximum capacity of removal of Cu and Cd by the brown seaweed Sargassum sinicola collected in the coasts of Guaymas, Sonora was determined; As well as the time in which the capacity of the alga is saturated and the effect of pH, the activation of the biomass and the presence of other ions in the solution on this capacity in different tests. Being that S. sinicola presents a low capacity of removal of Cd from marine water (2.8mg of metal by gram of algae), whereas it displays a good capacity of removal of Cu (52mg of metal by gram of algae) in comparison to the efficiencies of other biosorbents. Besides to display a good capacity of removal of Cu, S. sinicola it can maintain this capacity in a rank of pH and salinities common in the marine environment, combined to this the biomass it does not require of activation for the removal of this element, it is not affected by the presence of Cd in the solution and the time in which it carries out 98% of the removal of the metal is just 75 min. It is possible to be concluded that S. sinicola can be used like a biosorbent of low cost for the removal of Cu from marine water but does not for the removal of Cd."
