Ciclo reproductivo de la almeja de sifón Panopea globosa en la playa del sol, Empalme, Sonora, México

"La almeja de sifón Panopea globosa es una especie nativa de México que posee un alto potencial económico, de la cual no existen reportes relacionados a su distribución y su biología en los litorales mexicanos, desconociendo las bases biológicas que permitan su aprovechamiento. Derivada de una prospección realizada por el Centro Regional de Investigaciones Pesqueras en el litoral de Empalme, Sonora fueron localizadas poblaciones naturales en las costas de Sonora, lo cual está permitiendo realizar diversos estudios sobre su biología, ecología y potencial pesquero. En el presente estudio se muestran los resultados de un trabajo sobre el ciclo reproductivo de la almeja de sifón Panopea globosa, en el litoral de Empalme, Sonora, incluyendo la apariencia externa de las gónadas y la determinación del ciclo reproductivo usando técnicas histológicas. Las características macroscópicas externas de la masa gonadal no presentaron diferencias entre machos y hembras. Sin embargo, las diferencias entre sexos sólo se aprecian a nivel microscópico en los cortes histológicos del tejido gonádico. Se definieron cinco estadios gametogénicos: inmaduro = 0, actividad temprana = 1, actividad tardía = 2, maduro = 3, parcialmente desovado = 4 y vacío = 5. En invierno se presentan los estadios 1, en primavera el estadio 2 y en verano el estadio 3 con el posterior desove. Estos resultados indican que el ciclo reproductivo encontrado en P. globosa, es similar a lo reportado en otras especies del mismo género como P. abrupta en Puget Sound entre los límites de Seattle, EE.UU. y Vancouver, Canadá, y en P. zelandica en Nueva Zelanda."

"The Geoduck clam Panopea globosa is a native species of Mexico that possesses a high economic potential. Reports with respect to their distribution in the Mexican coast and their biology do not exist. Therefore, its biological basis that permits their use is not known. Recently, natural populations in the coast of Sonora have been located, which has permitted to carry out diverse studies on their biology, ecology and fishing potential. In the present study, the advances of a work on the reproductive biology of the Geoduck clam Panopea globosa, in the coast of Empalme-Sonora are shown, including its external appearance of the gonads, the determination of its reproductive cycle, and its fertility using histological techniques. The external macroscopic characteristics of the mass gonadal did not present differences between male and female. Nevertheless, the differences among sexes only are appreciated at the microscopic level in the histological slides of the gonadal tissue. Five stages of gametogenesis were defined: immature = 0, early activity = 1, late activity = 2, ripe = 3, partly spent = 4 and spent = 5. Stage 1 is presented in winter, stage 2 in spring, and stage 3 in summer, with the subsequent spawning. These results indicate that the reproductive cycle found up to now in P. globosa, is similar to that reported in other species of the same kind as P. abrupt in Puget Sound, which is located among the limits of Seattle, United States and Vancouver, Canada, and in P. zelandica in New Zealand."
