Piscine orthoreovirus : genetic variants and virulence

Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) is a virus of salmonids. It is widespread and the causative agent of Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Different variants of PRV-1 differ in virulence, but their distribution, infection dynamics in a fish population and differences in virushost interactions is not known. The overall aims of this study were to describe PRV-1 variants found in farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway and evaluate their virulence variations both in field and laboratory conditions. We further wished to study how the virus is introduced to and spreads between sites at sea.

Viruset forårsaker sykdommen hjerte- og skjelettmuskelbetennelse hos Atlantisk laks (Salmo salar) i oppdrett. Det finnes forskjellige genetiske varianter av viruset og disse har varierende virulens. Hvorvidt disse variantene også varierer i henholdsvis geografisk forekomst, infeksjonsdynamikk i laksepopulasjoner, og i interaksjon med målcelle er ikke kartlagt. Denne avhandlingen beskriver forekomsten av forskjellige varianter av PRV-1 i oppdrettslaks i Norge, og undersøker forskjeller mellom variantene i både laboratorieforsøk og i felt. Vi ønsket også å studere hvordan viruset introduseres til og spres mellom anlegg i sjøen.
