Experimental study on soil textures by mid-FTIR spectroscopy and elevation angle on landslides: a case study of the Province of Iloilo, Philippines

The Province of Iloilo in the Philippines is prone to landslides, which is triggered by heavy rainstorms and can cause severe damage to property and loss of life. To prevent such occurrences, a study was conducted to determine the influence of soil textures and slope angle on landslides and flood monitoring in areas such as Barotac Vejo, Miagao, Oton, and Leganes. The study employed two methods-mid-IR spectroscopy and an improvised apparatus-to gather accurate data on soil textures and slopes. The analysis showed that soil organic matter's mid-IR soil analysis directly affects soil water-holding capacity, thereby preventing landslides occurrences. Smaller-sized particles such as those of clay have a larger surface area leading to a higher water-holding ability, which is important in landslide-prone zones, except for sand, which settles fastest due to its larger mass. Slope angle also plays a crucial role in landslide occurrence, with a 25 deg angle having more movement than higher slopes like 50 and 80 deg. The increase in slope angle decreases stability, thereby leading a less landslide movement. The results revealed that landslides are rare in very high slope ranges due to fewer soil movements caused by the particle size and affected by the carbon and nitrogen content and their reaction. This study's finding can aid in forecasting, geohydrological processes, and landslide warning strategies to mitigate risks and reduce socioeconomic damage.
