Sequía e interacción sequía*barrenador en la caña de azúcar durante la etapa vegetativa* | Drought and drought *borer interaction in sugarcane during the vegetative stage

La sequía afecta negativamente al desarrollo y rendimiento de cultivos; el grado de afectación depende de su intensidad, del genotipo y de la interacción entre estos. En México, 62% de la caña de azúcar (Saccharum spp.) se cultiva bajo temporal. Para conocer algunos de los efectos de la sequía en este cultivo, se estableció un experimento en campo en Tlaquiltenango, Morelos, México en 2011. Se probaron diez variedades, en los tratamientos de sequía: con riego (S0) durante la Gran Sequía Invernal (GSI) que cubrió de finales de octubre de 2011 a mediados de mayo de 2012; sin riego de marzo a mediados de mayo de 2012 (S1); y sin riego de finales de noviembre de 2011 al final de la GSI (S2). Se cuantificó: número de brotes y cepas vivas; altura de planta; longitud, número y diámetro de tallos molederos; así como el número y longitud de entrenudos en estos. La sequía redujo el número de cepas y brotes vivos en 29 y 21%, respectivamente, debido al ataque de Diatraea sp., que se hizo más severo a medida que la sequía se intensificó. La recuperación de las plantas fue diferencial entre tratamientos, ya que la altura de la planta se redujo 15 y 26% para S1 y S2 respecto a S0, respectivamente. La longitud del tallo moledero se redujo en promedio para S1 y S2, 34%, asociado a reducciones en número y longitud de entrenudos. El número y diámetro de tallos molederos también se redujeron en sequía.

Drought impacts negatively growth and crop yield; the degree of damage depends on its intensity, genotype and the interaction between these. 62% of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in Mexico is grown under rainfed. To know some of the effects of drought in this crop, an experiment was established in the field in Tlaquiltenango, Morelos, Mexico in 2011. Ten varieties were tested, in the drought treatment: irrigated (S0) during the Great Winter Drought (GSI) which covered the end of October 2011 to mid-May 2012; without irrigation from March to mid-May 2012 (S1); without irrigation from late November 2011 to the end of the GSI (S2). Were quantified: number of shoots and live strains; plant height; length, diameter and number of grinding stems; number and length of internodes in these. The drought reduced the number of strains and live shoots in 29 and 21%, respectively, due to the attack of Diatraea sp., which became more severe as drought intensified. The recovery of plants was different between treatments, since the height of the plant reduced 15 and 26% for S1 and S2 regarding to S0, respectively. The length of grinding stems was reduced on average for S1 and S2, 34%, associated to reductions in the number and length of internodes. The number and diameter of grinding stems were also reduced by drought.
