Con el objetivo de evaluar la biomasa aérea y valor nutritivo de la gramínea forrajera Megathyrsus maximus cultivar ‛ Gamelote’, (antes Panicum maximum (Jacq)), en 6 edades de cosecha (21, 28, 35, 42, 49 y 56 días), y se llevó acabo un ensayo en la Estación Experimental de Río Negro de la Universidad Nacional Experimental “Simón Rodríguez”, ubicada en la población de Río Negro Municipio Acevedo del estado Miranda, correspondiente a una zona de vida de Bosque Tropical Lluvioso. El suelo es de textura franca, pH 6,0; bajo contenido de Nitrógeno (N), Fósforo (P), Potasio (K) y alto contenido de Magnesio (Mg), con una precipitación de 2.450 mm promedio anual y 26,5ºC de temperatura. Las variables estudiadas fueron Materia Seca de Biomasa (MSB), Altura (A), Relación Hoja: Tallo (H:T), proteína cruda (PC), Degradabilidad de la materia seca (DMS), contenido de P y Calcio (Ca). Se empleo un diseño experimental de bloques al azar con 3 repeticiones en arreglo de parcelas divididas. El efecto del período del año y la edad de la planta tuvieron efectos significativos sobre la producción de MSB, H y relación H:T. La biomasa aérea promedio de materia a partir de la edad de los 42 días superaron los 5000 kg.MS/ha en los períodos con altas precipitaciones. La relación H:T disminuyó con el aumento en edad de planta igual comportamiento fue para el contenido de PC estando por encima del valor crítico del 7% en todas las edades. El contenido de P bajó con el aumento en la edad superando el nivel mínimo de 0,18% al igual que el Ca, para alimentación animal. La DMS, se redujo con el incremento de la edad variando desde 71 a 54 %. El pasto Megathyrsus maximus, representa un buen potencial de producción de biomasa y valor nutritivo para alimentación animal en las condiciones edafoclimaticas de Río Negro, municipio Acevedo.
