Efeito de reduções contínuas e intermitentes do potencial matricial de água nas trocas gasosas e no crescimento de cultivares de cana-de- açúcar | Effect of continuous and intermittent reductions in water matric potential in gas exchange and growth of sugarcane cultivars

O estresse hídrico está inserido entre os principais fatores que limitam o crescimento e a produtividade agrícola. Embora seja moderadamente resistente à seca, a cultura da cana-de-açúcar tem consideráveis perdas de produtividade em decorrência de períodos prolongados de estiagem ou mesmo períodos intermitentes com precipitação pluvial insuficiente. Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo principal avaliar os efeitos de reduções contínuas e intermitentes do potencial matricial de água nas trocas gasosas de dióxido de carbono e de vapor d'água entre as plantas de cana-de-açúcar e o ambiente de cultivo, assim como o crescimento e as taxas de elongação dos colmos durante a fase de formação da cultura. Foram realizados três experimentos utilizando-se quatro cultivares de cana-de-açúcar, em casa-de-vegetação não climatizada, na área experimental da Meteorologia Agrícola da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. No primeiro experimento, foram avaliadas as trocas gasosas, a fluorescência da clorofila a, o potencial de água nas folhas e o crescimento dos colmos das cultivares de cana-de-açúcar RB867515, RB92579, RB855453 e RB928064, em decorrência de alterações do potencial matricial de água no substrato de cultivo, imposto a partir da suspensão periódica e retorno posterior dos eventos de irrigação e de fertirrigação. No segundo, avaliaram-se as trocas gasosas e a fluorescência da clorofila a das mesmas cultivares, no entanto, sob reduções contínuas do potencial matricial de água a partir da suspensão total dos eventos de irrigação. No terceiro experimento, analisou-se o comportamento das trocas gasosas e da fluorescência da clorofila a durante o período diurno, em um dia típico de céu claro, utilizando a cultivar RB92579 sob diferentes condições de disponibilidade hídrica. O déficit hídrico aplicado às cultivares de cana-de- açúcar provocou reduções na condutância estomática (gs), taxa de transpiração (E) e taxa de assimilação líquida de CO2 (A). Em média, no primeiro experimento, os valores de A foram 32,9 e 21,6 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1 para os tratamentos controle e deficiência hídrica leve, respectivamente, não havendo diferenças significativas entre cultivares. As diferenças mais nítidas ocorreram quando as plantas foram submetidas ao déficit hídrico moderado, no qual as reduções em relação ao controle foram, em média, 28, 42, 48 e 52 % para as cultivares RB867515, RB92579, RB928064 e RB855453, respectivamente. A cultivar RB867515 apresentou também os maiores valores de gs, E e estatura de colmos nos tratamentos com déficit hídrico moderado e severo, podendo ser usada como padrão de comparação. No segundo experimento, as maiores diferenças entre as cultivares ocorreram quando estavam submetidas ao potencial matricial de água em torno de −50 kPa, utilizando as medições obtidas entre 11:00 e 13:00 h. A cultivar RB867515 apresentou valores de A, gs, e E duas vezes superiores às demais cultivares, aproximadamente. A eficiência quântica potencial do Fotossistema II (Fv/Fm) foi fortemente influenciada pela disponibilidade de água no substrato de cultivo e pelos níveis de radiação solar reinantes nos dias anteriores às medições. No que se refere à eficiência do uso de água, esta tende a aumentar nos estágios iniciais do estresse hídrico, quando há limitação estomática da fotossíntese. No entanto, com a intensificação do estresse hídrico, também ocorreram limitações bioquímicas e, assim, a eficiência do uso de água diminui.

Water stress is included among the main factors that limit the growth and agricultural productivity. Although it is moderately resistant to drought, the sugarcane crop has considerable loss of productivity due to the prolonged drought periods or intermittent ones with inadequate rainfall. This research was developed with the main objective of evaluating, the effects of continuous and intermittent reductions of the water matric potential on gas exchange of carbon dioxide and water vapor between the plants of sugarcane and the crop environment, as well as the growth and stem elongation rates during the crop formative phase. Three experiments were carried out with four sugarcane cultivars, in a non-controlled environment greenhouse, located at the experimental area of Agricultural Meteorology of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. In the first experiment, it was evaluated the gas exchange, the fluorescence of chlorophyll a, leaf water potential and the stalk growth of the sugarcane cultivars RB867515, RB92579, RB855453 and RB928064, due to changes of the matric water potential in the growth substrate, imposed by periodic suspension and subsequent return of irrigation and fertigation events. In the second, the gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence of the same cultivars were evaluated, however, under continued reductions of the matric water potential by total suspension of the irrigation events. In the third experiment, the behavior of gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were analyzed during the diurnal time period, on a typical clear sky day, using the RB92579 cultivar under different water availability conditions. The water deficit applied to sugarcane cultivars caused reductions in stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rates (E) and net CO2 assimilation rates (A). On the average, the measured values in the first experiment were 32.9 and 21.6 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1 for control and mild water stress treatments, respectively, with no significant differences between cultivars. The most evident differences occurred when the plants were subjected to moderate water deficit, in which reductions compared to the control treatment were on the average 28, 42, 48 and 52% for cultivars RB867515 RB92579, RB928064 and RB855453, respectively. The cultivar RB867515 also presented the largest values of gs, E and stem heights under moderate or severe water stress treatments and it can be used as standard for comparisons. In the second experiment, the biggest differences between cultivars occurred when they were subjected to the matric water potential next to −50 kPa, during measurements performed between 11:00 and 13:00 h. The cultivar RB867515 presented values of A, gs, and E twice higher than the others, approximately. The potential quantum yield of Photosystem II (Fv / Fm) was strongly influenced by water availability in the growth substrate and the prevailing solar radiation levels in the days prior to the measurements. As regard to the water use efficiency, it tends to increase during the initial stages of water stress, when there is stomatal limitation of photosynthesis. However, with increased water stress, there are also biochemical limitations and thus the water use efficiency decreases.
