Efecto de enmiendas orgánicas en la movilidad de elementos químicos en relaves mineros | Effect of organic amendments on the mobility of chemical elements in mining tailings

Los relaves mineros son residuos que pueden ser una importante fuente de elementos contaminantes, particularmente de metales y sulfatos. En la actualidad se han desarrollado diferentes técnicas sustentables de remediación de relaves. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la aplicación de compost y borra de café en la lixiviación y absorción del cobre y sulfatos en plantas de Carpobrotus chilensis cultivada en un relave minero. Se estableció un ensayo con macetas en invernadero con tratamientos que incluyeron relaves mineros (RM) más la combinación con compost (RM+C) y borra de café (RM+BC) en dosis de 5 y 10 Mg ha-1. La duración del ensayo fue de 110 días. Se colectaron los lixiviados de las macetas para determinar concentración de Cu2+ y SO42-, pH y conductividad eléctrica (CE), además se estimó la carga total de Cu2+ y SO42- por tratamiento. Al final del ensayo en plantas, se determinó materia seca y concentración de Cu y S en parte aérea y raíz. Finalmente, los resultados arrojaron que, en lixiviados la concentración de Cu2+ fue significativamente menor para el tratamiento RM+BC-10 alcanzando niveles de 8,62±3 mg L-1 comparado con RM+C-10 (121,54±41 mg L-1) y RM (45,62±16 mg L-1). La mayor concentración inicial de SO42- se observó en el tratamiento RM (777 mg L-1), el cual disminuyó a 110 días alcanzando un valor final de 551 mg L-1. Los tratamientos con BC, fueron estables los primeros 75 días, mostrando una disminución solo al final del ensayo, especialmente en RM+BC-10 el cual obtuvo los menores valores reportados (513 mg L-1). Al final del ensayo, en plantas, las concentraciones de Cu para los tratamientos RM+BC-5 y RM+BC-10 aumentaron significativamente en parte aérea, alcanzando valores de 34.02±10 y 32.92±1.4 mg kg-1 respectivamente. En cuanto a la concentración de azufre en parte aérea no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre tratamientos, las plantas alcanzaron concentraciones de 1,04±0,2 %, mientras que, en raíz los tratamientos con compost fueron mayores y alcanzaron alrededor de 5,4% de S. La materia seca de la parte aérea aumentó significativamente en el tratamiento RM+C-10 que generó mayor biomasa aérea, pero generó la mayor carga de Cu2+ y altas carga SO42- en los lixiviados. Los resultados permiten recomendar la adición de borra de café en una dosis de 10 Mg ha-1 y el cultivo de C. chilensis para disminuir la lixiviación de Cu2+ y SO42- en relaves mineros y el uso de compost en una dosis de 10 Mg ha-1 para aumentar el crecimiento y retención de Cu y S en raíces de C. chilensis.

Mine tailings are wastes that can be an important source of contaminants, particularly metals and sulfates. Currently, different sustainable tailings remediation techniques have been developed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the application of compost and coffee grounds on the leaching and absorption of copper and sulfates in Carpobrotus chilensis plants grown in a mine tailing. A greenhouse pot trial was established with treatments that included mine tailings (RM) plus the combination of compost (RM+C) and spend coffee grounds (RM+BC) at doses of 5 and 10 Mg ha-1. The duration of the trial was 110 days. The leachates from the pots were collected to determine Cu2+ and SO42- concentration, pH and electrical conductivity (EC), and the total load of Cu2+ and SO42- per treatment was estimated. At the end of the plant trial, dry matter and Cu and S concentration in the aerial part and root were determined. Finally, the results showed that, in leachates, the Cu2+ concentration was significantly lower for the RM+BC-10 treatment, reaching levels of 8.62±3 mg L-1 compared to RM+C-10 (121.54±41 mg L-1) and RM (45.62±16 mg L-1). The highest initial SO42- concentration was observed in the RM treatment (777 mg L-1), which decreased at 110 days reaching a final value of 551 mg L-1. The BC treatments were stable for the first 75 days, showing a decrease only at the end of the trial, especially in RM+BC-10, which obtained the lowest values reported (513 mg L-1). At the end of the trial, in plants, Cu concentrations for the RM+BC-5 and RM+BC-10 treatments increased significantly in the aerial part, reaching values of 34.02±10 and 32.92±1.4 mg kg-1 respectively. As for the sulfur concentration in the aerial part, no significant differences were found between treatments, the plants reached concentrations of 1.04±0.2 %, while in the root, the compost treatments were higher and reached about 5.4% of S. The dry matter of the aerial part increased significantly in the RM+C-10 treatment, which generated greater aerial biomass, but generated the highest load of Cu2+ and high SO42- load in the leachates. The results allow us to recommend the addition of coffee grounds at a dose of 10 Mg ha-1 and the cultivation of C. chilensis to reduce the leaching of Cu2+ and SO42- in mine tailings and the use of compost at a dose of 10 Mg ha-1 to increase the growth and retention of Cu and S in roots of C. chilensis.
