Rendimiento de forraje de dos materiales genéticos de maíz (Zea mays L.) sembrados a diferentes distancias de siembra | Roughage yield of two genetic materials of corn (Zea mays L.) planted at different distances

Durante el periodo mayo a octubre del 2002, en la Estación Experimental Alfredo Volio Mata de la Universidad de Costa Rica, ubicada a una altitud de 1.542 msnm, con una precipitación media anual de 2050 mmm, se evaluó el efecto de diferentes densidades de siembra (58.000, 90.000 y 180.000 plantas/ha) sobre el rendimiento de materia seca, protena cruda y fibra neutro detergente por hectárea, de una variedad costarricense de maíz criollo de altura (>1.500 msnm) y un híbrido comercial, cuando las plantas alcanzaron el mismo estado fisiológico, el grano en estado lechoso (óptimo para ensilar), 147 días en la variedad criolla y 119 días en el híbrido. El rendimiento por hectárea de materia seca en el maíz criollo fue de 18,3 t, de proteína cruda 1,7 t y de fibra neutro detergente de 12,9 t contra 8, 0,8 y 5,8 t, respectivamente, en el maíz híbrido (P<0,01). La proporción de hojas y mazorcas en el cultivar híbrido fue de 8 y 3% superior al criollo e inferior en un 11% en los tallos. Se encontró que los rendimientos de materia seca y proteína cruda se maximizan en la distancia de 25 cm entre plantas.

This experiment was conducted at the Alfredo Volio Mata Experiment Station of the University of Costa Rica, located at an altitude of 1542 masl, with an annual rainfall of 2050 mm, during the period from May to October of 2002. The dry matter yield, the crude protein and the neutral detergent fiber per hectare, of a Costa Rican native corn (>1500 masl) and a commercial hybrid variety, were evaluated when the plants reached the same physiological stage, grain in milky stage (good for ensiling), at 147 days in the native variety and 119 days in the hybrid variety. Plant density effect was studied using different distances among plants (8, 16, 25, 50 cm). Dry matter yield per hectare in native corn was of 18.3 tons, 1.7 tons of crude protein and 12.9 tons of neutral detergent fiber against 8, 0.8 and 5.8 tons, respectively, for the hybrid variety (P<0.01). The ratio of leaves and ears in the hybrid cultivar were 8 and 3% superior and 11% inferior in stems. It was found that dry matter yield and crude protein content are maximized with the distance of 25 cm between plants.
